AMA Road Tests Terms & Conditions

General Requirements

  1. Please be present at the Registry office and ready 30 minutes prior to your Road Test.

  2. Your eligibility to take a Road Test will be confirmed on the Motor Vehicles system when your Road Test Permit is generated.

    • Exception: A Road Test may be taken by a suspended driver who has met all suspension requirements. However, you must take full responsibility if you know that you will be suspended on the day of the exam. The examiner will not take a suspended driver out for road test unless the road test is a requirement for reinstatement.
    • If you have a temporary licence, you must provide secondary identification (e.g. Passport or Birth Certificate).

  3. You must provide a vehicle suitable for the class of test you are being tested for. If any of the Vehicle Guidelines conditions are not met, it will result in termination of your road test by the examiner and all fees will be forfeit. The test permit will be void and no longer valid.

    • You must provide proof of valid insurance and valid vehicle registration (names of each must match). Commercial vehicles must also have CVIP stickers (if applicable).
    • AMA does not offer road test vehicles for rent and is unable to make rental arrangements for you through the examiner or any other rental agency.

  4. Requests to reschedule a road test appointment must be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the appointment time.

    • A $15 rescheduling fee will apply.
    • Road test appointments can only be rescheduled in an AMA centre or by calling 1-866-989-6370.

  5. Road test sales are considered final. Requests to cancel a road test appointment must be submitted a minimum of 48 hours in advance of the appointment time.

    • If the cancellation request is approved the road test will be refunded to the original payment method if possible, or an AMA gift card will be issued to the AMA member who purchased the road test.
    • A $25 cancellation fee will be subtracted from the refund amount.
    • Cancellation within 48 hours of a road test appointment is non-refundable and all fees will be forfeit.

  6. When a rental vehicle (i.e. Hertz, Avis) is being used for the road test, the name of the client taking the road test must be on the rental contract as the main driver or an additional driver. Vehicles rented from daily rental services (i.e. Car2Go) may be ineligible for road test usage. You are responsible for reviewing the terms and conditions of any rental agreement to determine if your rental vehicle can be used for road testing purposes.

  7. No passengers (including pets) will be allowed during the road test.

  8. You may not request a particular examiner.

  9. You must have a valid Road Test Permit. Only the person taking the Road Test or parent/guardian of a minor may purchase a Road Test Permit.

  10. The road test permit is only valid at the AMA location where it is purchased.

  11. The road test permit is valid for one year from the date it is purchased and it is valid for one road test appointment.

  12. Lost road test permits can be replaced for a fee of $9.45.
  13. You may only complete one road test per day.

  14. AMA Registries does not intervene with the result of the road test. If you have any questions and/or concerns regarding your driver examination road test, please contact: Alberta Transportation (Drivers Programs and Licensing Standards) at (403) 297-6679 or (780) 427-8901.
